Abstract: The analysis performed in this paper is based on the concepts of a heterogeneous nucleation and related controlling wave process. It is assumed that this wave process initiates a very rapid rearrangement of the atomic planes {110}c of the cubic phase into the basal planes {0001}h of the hexagonal phase. It is shown that the expected spectrum of orientations of habit planes of the {hhl}c type corresponds to the observed orientations. A method of calculation of threshold deformations is proposed which is based on a hypothesis (inherent in fast growth) that the relation of deformations caused by the controlling wave process is retained at deformations exceeding the threshold ones. Quantitative estimates are given for bcc titanium. A conclusion is drawn about the possibility of describing all morphological features on the basis of data on the elastic properties of the parent phase. © 2008 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
