Abstract: A cryston approach, which was earlier proposed to interpret the formation of shear bands in fee crystals, is extended to the case of hep crystals. The spectra of the expected standard orientations of shear-band boundaries are classified. The formation of a family of twinning-shear bands is qualitatively interpreted, and the natural origin of the difference in the frequency of occurrence of bands is found. It consists in a regular change in the Burgers vectors of crystons, which correspond to shear bands with known orientations of their boundaries. The fields of further studies are outlined.
